Iron Age Germanic EDC/fighting knife, stainless 11\" blade, handmade wooden hilt:
$42.00

Being offered is a stainless-bladed, full tang, wood-hilted knife of early (like IronAge) Germanic knife, with a fairly generic leather sheath, wet-molded to the thick guard and equipped with a leather tie for secure carry. The knife, overall, measures 17\"; the blade is 11 1/16\" x 1 3/16\" x1/8\", with a spear-point profile. It\'s far from razor-sharp, but could be gotten that way with not much effort. The hilt consists of an oak pommel and handguard, and a walnut haft that\'s about an inch longer than necessary, even for a larger hand. The intent, back when iron and even more so steel was an expensive commodity, and taking into account that most knife work is done with the point and forward portion of the edge(s), was to extend the reach of the weapon without the addition of extra and generally unused metal.

The proportions of the blade (fairly lightweight) and the quality of the steel (fair to okay, I would guess) define this as a primarily display weapon, if it were visibly a factory-made item. This isn\'t that. The blade has been modified in shape, and the hilt handmade, so that it\'s not cookie-cutter stamped-out brand-new shiny. Carried at an event, the blade isn\'t likely to be in general view, the hilt is, and the hilt is a handmade, one-of-a-kind item, involving no modern materials other than very tough epoxy inside the haft. The workmanship is correct to a plain, common-folk style of knife, and the reality is that the vast majority of people throughout history, even among the genuine warriors, were commoners, who tended to be frugal with what money or other form of wealth they might have. \"Art\" weapons are about status, not practical use.
