A very rare set of letters sent during the Great Depression by A USCoast Guard sailor. A very interesting group as they are largelyby him to one woman that was his wife, then ex-wife then lover. I have only read enough to understand the content but the letters were by a self-nicknamed sailor \"Pieds\" (feet in French}. He generally writes in English but about 30% of it is in French. He is from the Boston area and ties up with a woman in Allentown PA. I believe it is hersecond marriage and theyend up married and then divorced. There is a divorce decree in the collection for abandonment and an alimony order. He ends up in the Coast Guard and with the Depression is very thankful for his job.
Lifegoes on and Mary appears to marry someone else who is a travelingsalesman. The lettes are very personal and Pieds constantly calling Mary \"Rouge\" and Red. I assume she has red hair. He writes poetry, illustrates and eventually, she is irritated with him and kills his character which causes him great sadness. I suspect she is tired of the missed alimony and unfulfilled promises. The letters are written by a very educated man. Interestingly there are also lettersfrom her husband and hedied somewhere along the way. There are not many and they are not nearly as sexy. Mary seesto be enamored with Pieds. A typical letter closing: \"But this, too, is our night...Pieds comes now-Hold him so tightly, dearest, knowing that he adores you- loves you...My arms are about you, sweetheart, and yours Pieds feels around him..arms...hearts...lips. Goodnight Redness and know that this is your Pieds\"
A very special set of documents and my rough count is 400+ with notes and more. There is a lot here and you could make a novel with it.
Pieds is on may Coast Guard ships and on land in New England. The Mojave and Wyandotte come to mind. It would be great if we had his wife\'s letter.
