*FYI- I’m an old time er. My name has over 600 positive responses going back years. I haven’t used this name in over a year. I mentioned this because I do not want you to think I am some fly by night Relic dealer… Lol. I plan on listing many items this month.

About Myself and the store ChurchTreasures

As a relic aficionado and custodian for over 50 years. I’m now also an empty nester. The time has come for me to simplify my life. I have started up my old account and plan on beginning by finding new caretakers for some of my special religious treasures.

I have quite a collection of relics, reliquaries, icons, fonts, shrines, rosaries etc. that I will not be able to take along with me.

The time has come for me to find new custodians for my treasures. I currently have a Catholic relic of St Patrick and St Brigid listed and invite you to have a look. It is a rare and precious relic.

This listing is for the beautiful vintage Museum of Ireland reproduction of the Clonmacnoise Crucifixion Plaque.

If you’ve been searching for a crucifix without a cross, that has a depiction of Jesus smiling while being crucified, and sporting a long mustache, then look no further!

The Clonmacnoise Crucifixion Plaque is a late-10th or early-11th century (often given as c. 1090–1110) Irish gilt-bronze sculpture showing the Crucifixion of Jesus, with two attendant angels hovering above his arms to his immediate left and right.

Below them are representations of the Roman soldiers Stephaton (the sponge-bearer) and St. Longinus (the lance-bearer) driving spears into his chest.

The plaque is one of eight such Early Medieval Irish crucifixion plaques to have survived, but was, in its closely observed detail, especially around the figure's clothing, described by the art historian Máire de Paor as the "most charming of the series.”

It measures 8.0 cm (3.1 in) x 7.3 cm (2.9 in), and was acquired by the National Museum of Ireland – Archeology, Dublin, in 1935.

Christ is shown as still alive and with open eyes.[6] His head and outstretched arms are disproportionally large compared to the rest of his body, and he is clothed in a long chasuble (a type of liturgical vestment) that reaches to his knees. He is smiling despite the nail-heads or puncture wounds in the palms of each of his hand, which have been incurred from the spears held by Stephaton and Longinus.[7]

The panel is similar to the more well known and earlier Rinnegan (or Athlone) Crucifixion Plaque in its rendering of the figure's hair and garments.[8]

In addition, ii is similar to a stone cross on the Calf of Man island. In that work, Christ is also depicted with a moustache, forked beard and long hair.

The figures are surrounded by a rectangular frame, the lower border of which Jesus, Stephaton and Longinus stand. No part of the cross is visible.

Art historians believed the plaque was originally attached to an alter, Illuminated Gospel or reliquary.

The entire plaque measures 5.25” x 5”.

The golden center plaque measures 3.1 x 2.9”

The plaque is attached to a wood covers velvet plaque. The velvet and scene are in beautiful condition.
