IMPERATOR (1913)
She was a German ocean liner built for the Hamburg America Line, Launched in 1912. At the time of her completion in June 1913, she was the largest passenger ship in the world, surpassing the new White Star Liner OLYMPIC.
She was built at A.G. Vulcan, Hamburg, Germany. Her maiden voyage was 11 June 1913, Cuxhaven to New York via Southampton.She was a 52,117 GT and displacement of 53,000 tons. Length of 906' and beam of 98.3' and draught of 35.2'. Decks: 11. 4 steam turbines, 24 knots, 4,234 passengers: 908 first, 592 second 962 third and 1,772 steerage (fourth). Crew of 1,180.
IMPERATOR served for 14 months on HAPAG'S transatlantic route, until the outbreak of WW I, after which she remained in port in Hamburg. After the war, she was briefly commissioned into the U.S. Navy as U.S.S. IMPERATOR (ID-4080) and employed as a transport, returning American troops from Europe. Following her service with the U.S. Navy she was purchased jointly by Britain's Cunard Line and White Star Line as part of war reparations where she sailed as the flagship R.M.S. BERENGARIA for the last 20 years of her career.
Sold for scrap in 1939.
