Chocolate and orange trains such as the CITY OF MIAMI and the CITY OF NEW ORLEANS were just two of their better known passenger trains.The IC\'s passenger fleet was being constantly updated and modified for continued service in a changing marketplace. After the road\'s initial post World War Two passenger car buying spree, few newly built cars were procured, although the road did purchase cars from other roads. The Illinois Central was able to meet the travelling public\'s needs by virtue of the continual rebuilding and conversions performed at their Chicago Bumside Shops. This work was often as complex as taking an ordinary coach and completely rebuilding it into a streamlined observation car.Although the GM&O was a smaller operator of passenger trains than rival Illinois Central, they did operate such well-known trains as the Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge, all painted in the red and maroon paint scheme.The GM&O primarily operated passenger equipment acquired from predecessor roads Gulf, Mobile and Northern and the Mobile and Ohio. along with equipment inherited from the Alton (known as the Chicago and Alton prior to B&O control). While much of this heavyweight equipment was fairly standard, the GM&O also operated two nearly identical train sets constructed both in aluminum and steel and featuring full-width diaphragms between cars. An interesting facet to GM&O passenger cars is the fact that their streamlined (i.e., lightweight) coach and parlor cars featured three axle trucks, in the belief that six wheel trucks contributed to smoother riding qualities. Unfortunately, due to age, none of the GM&O\'s passenger equipment was acquired by Amtrak.
