Rickmansworth Park, 28 May 1885. Hugh Culling Eardley Childers (1827-1896), statesman, Chancellor of the Exchequer (1882), Home Secretary (1886), had a successful start to his career as a politician in Melbourne in the 1850’s. Later he was instrumental in bringing about the abolition of transportation. He was responsible for the administration of the War Office during the Transvaal War of 1881 and the Egyptian Campaign of 1882.
