But over the years, Tully’s evolved into more of a grocery and dry goods establishment, and specialists like “Howard’s Hardware” appeared. Like so many in Liberty Falls, Douglas Howard originally traveled to Colorado in search of his fortune in the mines. But also like many others, he didn’t “strike it rich” and faced the choice of finding a way to make a living in the West or return back East to start over. Lucky for Douglas Howard, he had struck up a friendship with banker Jason DuBois. As members of the ‘59ers Club, a men’s group for early settlers of Colorado, Howard and DuBois got to know each other well. One day Jason DuBois said to his friend, “Douglas, it’s no secret that you’d like to leave the mining trade. If you could do anything you want instead, what would it be?” Douglas Howard didn’t hesitate. “I’d run a hardware store like the ones Back East, with building supplies and tools and everything a man needs to run a ranch or home.” DuBois thought that was a splendid idea and lent his friend the money to start “Howard’s Hardware”—one of Liberty Falls’ thriving new businesses.
