\"The Hoshen - \"Sacred Breastplate of Judgement\", \"Urim and Thummim\"

The Hoshen was the breastplate worn by the Jewish high priests in the Holy Temple at Jerusalem. It was set with 12 colorful and translucent gemstones that represent each tribe of the 12 biblical tribes of Israel (children, sons of Israel). It is believed that the breastplate helped the High Priests to answer and judge the children of Israel that came to the temple

The Hoshen was related to the high powers of the priests and the ability to \"tell the future\" (divination). In Hebrew this is termed -\"Urim and Tumim\" - possibly \"Light and Perfection\" or \"Perfect lights\". The Rabbis understood the Urim and Thummim to be part of the breastplate and that its prophetic, oracular function came from light shining through the twelve gemstones mounted on the breastplate. Since each stone was inscribed with the names of the twelve tribes, Some believe the Urim were the lights, while the Thummim was a device or code that helped in interpreting the messages

Jacob was given the other name of \"Israel\" after wrestling that epiphany in Gen32:28. TheIsraeliteswere aSemitic peopleof theAncient Near East, who inhabited part ofCanaanduring thetribal and monarchic periods(15th to 6th centuries BCE),and lived in the region in smaller numbers after the fall of the monarchy. The term \"Israelites\" is the English term (derived from the ancient Greek) for theHebrewbiblical termBnei Yisraelwhich properly translates as either \"Sons ofIsrael\" or \"Children of Israel\", and refers both to the direct descendants of the patriarchJacobas well as to the historical populations of theUnited Kingdom of Israel and Judah. In thepost-exilicperiod, beginning in the 5th century BCE, the two known remnants of the Israelite tribes came to be referred to asJewsandSamaritans, inhabiting the territories ofJudea,GalileeandSamaria. Other terms sometimes used include the \"Hebrews\" and the \"Twelve Tribes\" (of Israel).

The Jews, which include the tribes ofJudah,Simeon,Benjaminand partiallyLevi, are named after the southern IsraeliteKingdom of Judah. This shift ofethnonymfrom \"Israelites\" to \"Jews\", although not contained in theTorah, is made explicit in theBook of Esther(4th century BCE),a book in theKetuvim, the third section of the JewishTanakh. The Samaritans, whose religious texts consists of the five books of theSamaritan Torah(but which does not contain the books comprising the Jewish Tanakh), do not refer to themselves as Jews, although they do regard themselves as Israelites, as per the Torah.

The Kingdom of Samaria contained the remaining ten tribes, but followingSamaria\'sconquest by Assyria, these were allegedly dispersed and lost to history, and henceforth known as theTen Lost Tribes. Jewish tradition holds that Samaria is named so because the region\'s mountainous terrain was used to keep \"Guard\" (Shamer) for incoming enemy attack. According to Samaritan tradition, however, the Samaritan ethnonym is not derived from the region of Samaria, but from the fact that they were the \"Guardians\" (Shamerim) of the true Israelite religion. Thus, according to Samaritan tradition, the region was named Samaria after them, not vice versa. In Jewish Hebrew, the Samaritans are calledShomronim, while in Samaritan Hebrew they call themselvesShamerim.

InJudaism, an Israelite is, broadly speaking, alaymember of the Jewishethnoreligious group, as opposed to the priestly orders ofKohanimandLevites. In texts ofJewish lawsuch as theMishnahandGemara, the term יהודי (Yehudi), meaning Jew, is rarely used, and instead the ethnonym ישראל (Yisraeli), or Israelite, is widely used to refer to Jews.Samaritanscommonly refer to themselves and Jews collectively as Israelites, and describe themselves as the Israelite Samaritans.(from wikipedia)
