This is a charming kachina/katsina by well known Hopi master artist Wilmer Kaye. This carving depicts a Snow Maiden rising from a kiva, or traditional flat roofed & tiered Hopi home. The title of this work as inscribed under the artist’s signature as simply “Snow Maiden”. Wrapped in an orange, white & black blanket, this snow maiden also wears turquoise colored earrings. This is a beautifully carved piece that shows off the amazing talent of the artist. Like the work of his brother Wilfred Wilmer Kaye’s works are highly sought after. The work is signed & titled on the base by the artist & dated April 1991 (“91/4”).
This piece was acquired at a fund raising sale for the Cantor Art Center at Stanford over 15 years ago.
This kachina is 11 1/2” tall. The diameter of the base is 3 1/4”.
