Presented today is this beautiful Hopi Kachina doll, depictingthe Palhikmana Kachina. Standing 11 and a half inches tall, the entire sculpture was carvedfrom a single piece of Cottonwood root (except for the various feathers), byElgean Joshevama, a carver of transcendent technical skill. The figure ispainted in dark, muted tones, like a summerstorm cloud, as befits this very important bringer of water. Elgean alwayscarves his emotions with a ruthless honesty, and nowhere is that more evidentthan in this extraordinary work. The person lucky enough to purchase thisexquisite piece will own a tiny treasure. Although there was a recent time thatElgean almost stopped carving, he has entered an amazingly productive period,and I am happy to say that Elgean has found his center again, and his workshows a fresh joy and vitality.
