Not sure of tribal connection, was probably either Hopi or Navajo made.This kachina is part of a collection of my husband’s. His father ran trading posts on the Navajo Nation from approximately 1940 to 1960. Most are in good condition, except where noted. Most have artist’s names on the bottom, with the exception of one or two.
The Hoop Dancer is used to amuse the audience during a major ceremony. The spinning hoops are thought to connect with the spirit world, and bring a glimpse of the harmony of life. This is a beautiful kachina, mostly in tan, black and white, with very nice turquoise accents. White fur is used in the headpiece and at the waist and ankles. The face is well-defined. Very nice. Signed by artist: Nelson.
