Calcite is a stable carbonate mineral composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in a crystal form that is both transparent and translucent. The crystals that make up a stone are each contained in a ‘cell’ of white dense calcite which creates the honeycomb look. The translucent nature of the stone is a by-product of the crystal structure which passes light from one crystal to the next; and the corresponding refracted light illuminates adjacent crystals. Internally the varying thickness of the white calcite makes-up the boundary each cell and affects how the individual crystals in each cell hold and refract light. This structural orientation allows each cell to stand-out visually.

The color of each specimen is related to the concentration of sulfur and iron impurities present during the mineral’s formation. Variation in color is also correlated with the deposits thickness. The thinner the stone is cut the lighter the color, the thicker the stone, the darker and richer the color appears.
