For sale is a grouping of ephemera from American poet Archibald Hamilton Rutledge (1883-1973) of letters and a book.

The book of "Lifes Extras" originally published in 1928, A wonderful little book of meditations which illustrates Rutledge's love of nature, his deep faith and his spiritual vision. The book has a very personal note in it to his friend, Rosamon Wooten Henderson, a songwriter, in which he speaks about his illness and the fact that it is terminal. In addition there is correspondence from and to Archeologist Peter A. Brannon. The letters discuss Indian arrow Points.

Archibald Hamilton Rutledge (1883-1973) was an American poet and educator, the first South Carolina poet laureate from 1934 to 1973. He was the son of Col. Henry Middleton Rutledge and Margaret Seabrook Rutledge. He was born on the old Magnolia rice plantation that was once visited by Francis Marion during the Revolution and visited by George Washington in 1791. He graduated from the Porter Military Academy, Charleston, SC. He received a scholarship to Union College, Schenectady, NY where he graduated first in his class in 1904. He had already published some poems. He accepted a temporary English department position at the Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, PA which lasted for 33 years. He married Florence Louise Hart, the sister-in-law of the headmaster, on December 19, 1907. He was and avid hunter and fisherman and wrote 45 volumes of prose, many of them about South Carolina outdoors. In addition, he published 25 volumes of poetry. He was a runner-up for two Pulitzer Prizes and a Nobel Prize for Literature. He was named poet laureate of South Carolina in 1934 a position he held until his death. He was awarded more than 20 honorary doctorates and 30 gold medals for nature writing. On the death of his wife he composed two moving poems "It is Over" and "F. H." He retired in 1937 to restore the old plantation house. He sold the plantation to the state of South Carolina and it is now a state park.
