Monterey city is located in Monterey County onthe southern edge of Monterey Bay on the state of California’s CentralCoast. It was founded in 1770 andfunctioned as the capital of Alta California under both Spain(1804-1821) and Mexico (1822-1846). During this period, Montereyhosted California’s first theater, public building, public library,publicly funded school, printing-press, and newspaper. It was originally the only port of entry forall taxable goods in California. In 1846, during the “Mexican American War of 1846-1848”, the UnitedStates Flag was raised over the “Custom House’ and after Mexicoceded California to the U.S. at the end of the war, Montereyhosted California’s first constitutional convention in 1849. The “Old Custom House” is theoldest surviving government building in California built in 1827 by Mexicanauthorities in Monterey, then capital of Alta California. It was the first designated“California Historical Landmark”, marking the site where U.S.Commodore John Drake Sloat raised the American flag and declared Californiapart of the United States in 1846 during the American “Conquest ofCalifornia”. The “Old Custom House, MontereyCalifornia” is also on this “Detroit Photographic Co.” undivided back card with a copyright of 1899. There are about a zillion images of the “CustomHouse” listed but not this version.It is in good to very good condition with minor wear and a clean, clearimage in the “Detroit Photographic” style. The reverse is also clean.
