Elberfeld is a municipal subdivision of the Germancity of Wuppertal but was an independent town until 1929. The first official mentioning of the geographicarea on the banks of today’s “Wupper River” was”Elverfelde” in adocument of 1161. In 1826 Fredrich Harlort,a famous industrialist politician, had a suspension railway built as a trialand ran it on the grounds of what is today the tax office at Elberfeld.The railway the “Schwebebahn Wuppertal” was eventually built between Oberbarmenand Vohwinkel and runs through Elberfeld. In 1888 the district of Sonnborn wasincorporated into Elberfeld. In 1929 the tows of Barmen, Elberfeld,Vohwinkel, Cronenberg and Ronsdorf became a municipal entityofficially called “Bermen-Elberfeld. In 1930, it was decided to renamethe newly incorporated city “Wuppertal” with Eberfeld the largestmunicipal subdivision.

I was unable to find any information for the “Café-Restaurant“Burghof” in Eberfeld. I did find “The Berghoff Restaurant”that was established in by German immigrants in 1870 that has become a Chicagolandmark.

In any event this card, published by ‘Hugo Edelhoff”chronicles a turn of the century interior of the “Elberfeld Café Burghof”.The card is in good condition with minor wear on the corners and edges and aclean, clear, aged image and reverse.
