In 1637, the firstEnglishsettlerin theSalisbury-Amesburyregion,John Bayly,whocrossed theMerrimack Riverfrom the new settlement atNewbury,built a log cabin and began to clear the land for cultivation.Aplantation was established on the left bank of theMerrimack, asfar north asHampton, to be calledMerrimac.Inearly spring of 1639, around 60 planters took up residence on land cleared bynatives.

The town was originally namedColchesterbutwas renamedSalisburyin 1640.In 1642, a town wasformed and was called “New Town”. In 1666, the town was named “NewSalisbury” which was changed toAmesburyin1667.It became a city in 1996 and is largely residentialtoday.

This card, published by “Howes Stationary Amesbury”,is captioned “Sparhawk Street and HillsideAvenue”.It looks on the map that Market St. becomes SparhawkSt. which turns into Hillside Ave, and it looks on the card that itis residential nice houses. The image isof the street with a woman and two gentlemen in era fashion, crossing thestreet to a livery on the other sidewalk.The card is not dated but is a DB, 1907-1915, and the fashion and dirt streetfit the era. The card is in very goodcondition with some minor wear on the corners.The image is clean and clear with an album corner mark in the upperright corner. The reverse is not writtenon and is clean. It is a nice card from adifferent era.
