HEZEKIAHWYLLYS was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Continental Army, who fought in thebattles of Long Island and White Plains. He was later appointed Colonel of theFirst Regiment of Militia, which frequently turned out on alarms delivered byExpress Riders while riding throughout many towns. He was in Putnam’s force onthe Hudson during Burgoyne’s campaign and also at Stonington and New Haven whenthose towns were attacked by the British.

Werarely see documents signed by Hezekiah Wyllys, but in the document offeredhere, Wyllys affirms an important Express Ride to Gov. Trumbull’s to receiveimportant orders. 4 ¼ x 7 ¼ documentcertifying “that Ashbel Dodd was necessarily sent on Express to his ExcellencyGovernor Trumbull at Lebanon, in order to receive his commands in regard toreenlisting and marching the Artillery Company in the Town and that the saidDodd performed the Journey at his own Expence.Hezekiah Wyllys, Lt. Col. 1st Reg.”

Wyllyssaw considerable activity during the Revolutionary War, including at LongIsland and White Plains. The Revolutionary War produced successes and failuresfor the Patriots. The British defeated the Continental Army in the Battle ofLong Island, fought on August 27, 1776, and gained access to the strategicallyimportant Port of New York, which they held for the remainder of the war. OnOctober 28, 1776, British forces attacked George Washington’s Patriot army atWhite Plains, forcing the Patriots to retreat in defeat. This retreat forcedWashington to retreat from the battlefield and evacuate New York.

Duringthe Revolutionary War, Gov. Trumbull was the only governor to side with thecolonists, making him both the last governor of the Connecticut colony and thefirst governor of Connecticut.

Lebanon, CT, thedestination of Express Rider Dodd’s trip, is rich with Revolutionary Warhistory and was nicknamed “Heartbeat of the Revolution.” Gov. Trumbullwent on to convene the Council on Safety at his home, which was the primarymeeting place for this group and became the Continental Store for supplying theAmerican patriots. At one point, the war office was connected to Trumbull’shome, via a secret tunnel. Some refer to the office today as “The Pentagon ofthe Revolution.”
