Kizzur Mizrahi - Mattenot Ani  HEBREWVG CONDITION, HARDCOVER, LARGE VOLUME Supper-commentary on Rashi based on an abridgement of Mizrahi and others by R. Isaac ben Naphtali ha-Kohen of Ostrog (Beuking; 15-16 cent). R. Elijah ben Abraham Mizrahi (Mizrahi, Re’em, c. 1450–1526), the leading rabbinic authority of the Ottoman Empire, is best known today for his popular super-commentary on Rashi, Perush al Rashi, referred to as Mizrahi, First published in Venice in 1527 (see 16th Cent. 1:188-89), Mizrahi has been frequently republished and the subject of many commentaries.
A large work, the first edition of Mizrahi is a 340 leaf folio, and has been the subject of several abridgements, beginning with that of R. Jacob Marcaria (Riva di Trento, 1561). That edition Kizzur Mizrahi was published as part of a Hameshei Humshei Torah with Targum and the commentary of R. Isaac Arama (Ba’al ha-Akedah, c. 1420–1494). This abridgement, also known as Mattenat Ani, was printed in two parts, Genesis (1604) and Exodus through Deuteronomy (1608). The first title page states that it is, “All the commentaries, early and later, found on Rashi’s commentary, joined and combined, by R. Isaac Kohen of Ostrog.” It was printed by Judah Leib and Ezriel ben Moses Schedel at, according to the title page, the press of the noble Hayyim Ga’al Yaklish Katz. The title page is dated Sunday, 25 Nissan 364 (April 25, 1604). The title page of the second part omits the name Kizzur Mizrahi and the place of printing, which is given in the colophon. It is dated Monday, Erev Rosh Hodesh Kislev 368 (29 Heshvan, = November 19, 1607). There are copies of the second title page in which the year is given as 369 (1608); in that year 29 Heshvan was a Shabbat.

Isaac ben Naphtali’s introduction follows. He has condensed Mizrahi, whose words are deep and sweeter than honey, but not to the extent that was done in the Riva di Trento abridgement. Isaac describes Mizrahi as the head of the commentaries, followed by three heads of the exile in Ashkenaz, R. Nathan Spira (Imrei Shefer, 1591-97), R. Judah ben Bezalel (Maharal, Gur Aryeh, Prague, Cracow/Lublin, 1578-79), and R. Simeon Aschaffenburg (Devek Tov, Venice, 1588). He also adds an extensive list of other commentators, among them R. Israel Isserlein, Imrei No’am, Ba’al ha-Turim, Ramban, Rabbenu Bahya ben Asher, and Ba’al Akedah, and more contemporary commentators such as R. Isaac ben Judah ha-Levi (Pa’ne’ah Raza, Prague, 1607), Hokhmat Shelomo (R. Solomon Luria), and R. Menoah Hendel. Isaac ben Naphtali entitled the work Kizzur Mizrahi because it is primarily built upon Mizrahi’s commentary and called his additions Mattenat Ani. He has added marginal references for the Talmud. The text is in two columns in rabbinic letters, with initial words of books in historiated letters. Foliation is replete with errors. There are a small number of depictions of geographical boundaries and the layout of the Tabernacle. This is the only edition of Isaac ben Naphtali’s Kizzur Mizrahi, his only published work.
