Statements of editions and dates in my listings should not be regarded as conclusive. In many, or maybe most, cases, it isn\'t possible to make definitive statements on such matters. For instance, if a book says 1879 on the title page, it may have been published in a different year, like 1878. And even if 1879 is widely regarded as the date of the \"first edition,\" that does not necessarily mean that a specific example with that date is a first edition.

Overall, I consider this a very nice copy. Both of the folding plates are present (one in front and one in back). The front plate has been repaired with tape, which probably was not the best approach, but to me it is not particularly offensive.
There are other condition issues that never really bothered me. There is some foxing of the type visible in the images. I never thought much about the condition issues. I was always just happy to have what I considered a nice copy dated 1892.
These days, I believe the year 1892 is normally stated as the year of the first edition—and as far as I know, there is no earlier date stated on the title page of any edition. And I think normally people have stated 1892 as the year of the first printing or first publication or the like. And I think I have probably done such myself.
However, now I see, on Google Books, that The Publishers\' Circular, December 19, 1891, page 694, lists the book under \"Publications of the Week,\" which strongly suggests that the book was actually published in late 1891.
I don\'t know whether there was more than one printing with the date 1892 on the title page, but a prior owner very thoughtfully wrote his name (looks like Wm Batchelder) and the date (Mch 1892), so evidently this was printed quite early in the year (or quite possibly in 1891).
There were definitely multiple printings of the book, including at least one revised version. This is only the second copy of this book I have owned. As I recall, my previous copy had been in J.B. Findlay\'s collection, and I am pretty sure that this copy is in much better condition.
I obtained this copy in 2014. (An agent offer for me in the April 26, 2014, Potter & Potter sale.) I paid $720 for the book (including buyer\'s premium)—that doesn\'t include shipping or my agent\'s fee (which was quite low).
This has a label on the inside back-cover, oval-shaped, that says, \"THOSE WHO KNOW DON\'T TELL\" (at the top), and \"THOSE WHO TELL DON\'T KNOW.\" And in the center, it states, \"BURTON S. SPERBER.\"
Professor Hoffmann is well known as one of the principal authors in the field of magic. HisModern Magicis one of the great classics of magic literature.
