Sexologist Havelock Ellis wrote this short note on a blank British post card to arrange a meeting with the recipient in a museum reading room in 1887.
Autograph note signed "H Ellis". 1 page, 2¾x4¾. Written on verso of a blank British halfpenny post card. Postmarked "Red Hill Stattion Post Office," May 20, 1887 and London, England, May 20, 1887. Addressed to W. MacKenzie, Esq., Lamb Buildings, Temple, London, England. In full: "I expect to be at museum reading room nearly all day on Tuesday. Could you come up, say, at 12. 30? - at all wants I shall be there; no answer necessary". Postscripted: "I usually sit somewhere in H.". Ellis (1859-1939), born Henry Havelock Ellis, was trained as a physician, but never practiced. Instead, he devoted his life to the scientific study of sex. His Studies in the Psychology of Sex in seven volumes was completed between 1897 and 1928. The entire collection, a thorough study of problems in sexuality, was banned on grounds of obscenity in his native England. Lightly toned, soiled, stained and creased. Normal postal marks, which touch body of letter but not signature. Light tear at left edge. Rounded corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
