$20.00

We are offering two receipts for payments of interest of $210.00 earned on an H Bond [savings bond], paid to the Estate of H. B. Pierrepont [Hezekiah Beers Pierrepont]- one receipt is dated May 2, 1857; the other is dated May 2, 1859. The receipts were signed by H. E. Pierrepont [Henry Evelyn Pierrepont], Executor of his father\'s estate.
The Pierrepont family were one of the most prominent and influential families of 19th century Brooklyn, New York. Hezekiah Beers Pierrepont amassed a fortune through the operation of a farm and gin distillery, and through real estate investments in the Village and City of Brooklyn. Henry Evelyn Pierrepont (1808-1888) - spent much of his life working to establish Brooklyn as a flourishing metropolis. In 1844, a Brooklyn ferry lease was granted to him, and he subsequently combined the five existing Brooklyn ferries into the Brooklyn Union Ferry Company, which created frequent, regular ferry service between Brooklyn and New York City, monopolizing transportation across the East River prior to the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883. Henry & his brother, William, established Pierrepont Stores, a warehouse on the East River that received and stored freight from arriving ships.
