This beautiful and scarce card is from the 1880s. Wiggins & Goodale ran The Great Wardrobe together until 1889, when Goodale became the sole proprieter.
Card measures 5.5 x 4.5 in. There is a small amount of paper loss on the front of the card but has not been mounted in an album. There is some foxing due to the age of the card.
The Great Wardrobe was a clothing store located in Watertown, New York during the Victorian era, and like many businesses of the time, they used trade cards as a form of advertising. The lithograph is by Sackett, Wilhelms & Betzig, NY. The address for the Great Wardrobe Clothing House was at No. 14 Woodruff House, In Watertown, New York. At the time it was owned by Wiggins & Goodale. The back of the card says to look for the signs of the Two Lions & Golden Horseshoe so likely this card was customized for the business. Watertown NY residents may remember that Doug Berry had one of these lions in his coin shop on Public Square.
Like many businesses of the time, Great Wardrobe used trade cards as a form of advertising. One such trade card featured two lions tearing clothing in a Roman Coliseum. This image may have been chosen to suggest that the clothing sold at the Great Wardrobe was strong and durable, able to withstand the kind of rough treatment depicted in the image.
The Roman Coliseum was also a popular cultural reference during the Victorian era, evoking a sense of grandeur, spectacle, and history.
