Governor Mayor James Michael Curley Historical Letter Regarding Indictment, 1944:
$315.00

This is an authentic and unique item of historical significance. It is a letter written in 1944 by Gertrude Curley, the wife of James Michael Curley, to her brother, Richard Casey. In it she discusses the trial and indictment (ongoing on at the time of this letter) as well as other things for 4 full, handwritten and (mostly) legible pages). I have typed out the contents of the first paragraph as an idea of the contents. Included is the original envelope, official and custom to James Curley while in the House of Representatives. The paper on which the letter is written is also on official James Curley letterhead.

No other Curley collector will have an item like this! I am open to offers.

First paragraph (my translation):

"Dick Darling,

The money order arrived OK. Thanks dear, it came just in the nick of time as the pickings are lean over here, the Governor says. Practically nobody comes to the office. He says that the constituents know that while he is under this Indictment his influence is nil so they go to someone else. He went to court the other day when they were trying to have him and that ... eliminated from the group. Segregated and tried separately or something. He was furious when he came before the judge to find that Leahy had sent Chase to represent him and he didn’t have a single citation to present the court and he was so ignorant it annoyed the judge and the judge spoke of it and the Governor lost out (?). The Governor told the judge that Chase was NOT his council. It was an awful fizzle. He hasn’t been able to contact Leahy since. It looks to me as though Mr. Leahy sees that there isn’t any big money in it and is going to bow out. I hope not. Leahy just won a big case over here. He’s a good lawyer alright. What a mess."
