Glyptodonis a genusofglyptodont(an extinctgroup of large, herbivorous armadillos) that lived from the Pleistocene, around2.5 million years ago, to the Early Holocene, around 11,000 years ago,

Glyptodonand other glyptodonts\' most distinctivecharacteristic are the large dorsal carapace composed of interconnectedosteoderms that covered much of the dorsum. It was covered by a protectiveshell composed of more than 1,000 2.5cm-thick bony plates, calledosteodermsorscutes. Each species of glyptodont had its own unique osteoderm pattern and shell type. With this protection, they were armored liketurtles. Unlike mostturtles, glyptodonts could not withdraw their heads, but instead had abonycap on the topof theirskull. Even the tailofGlyptodonhad a ring of bones for protection. Such amassive shell needed considerable support, evidenced by features such asfusedvertebrae, short but massivelimbs, and a broad shoulder girdle. Glyptodonreachedover 6 feet long and 880 pounds in weight.

Glyptodonwashad a mixed diet of grasses and other plants, instead living at the edgeforests and grasslands where the shrubbery was lower.Glyptodonhada wide muzzle, an adaptation for bulk feeding The armor could protect theanimal from predators, of which many coexisted withGlyptodonduringits existence, including the \"saber-tooth cat\"Smilodon, the \"bone-crushingdog\"Borophagus, and the giant bearArctotherium.

Some evidencesuggests that humans drove glyptodonts to extinction.Hunters may haveused the shells of dead animals as shelters in inclement weather.Evidencefrom the Campo Laborde and La Moderna archaeological sites in relative Doedicurusand another glyptodontsurvived until the Early Holocene, coexisting withhumans for a minimum of 4,000 years.
