Dating from 1061, Pitigliano is a town in the Italian province of Tuscany. The lengthy historical presence of a Jewish community that has always been well integrated into the social context has led to the town being called "the little Jerusalem." Giuseppe Celanta in his The Jews of Pitigliano: Four Centuries of a Diverse Community (Pitigliano: ATLA, 2001) chronicles and interprets the Jewish presence and history in the town. From the book notes: "A sequence of struggles and trials, outstanding for its circumstances and the spirit of integration, The history of the Jewish Community, in the institutional, economic and social life of the town of Pitigliano. The Jews of Sorano, Sovana and upper Latium. Softcover, 1st, 139 pp, b/w ills. Little visible wear; tiny speck on lower outer edge on front of pages.
