- Brown vulcanite oxidation removed (if vulcanite)

- Bowl pits may be filled with food grade gypsum (plaster of paris) the kind used with corn cob pipes (gypsum can be easily removed and identified due to its bright white color in the case a buyer wants to inspect the depth of a pit.

After my re-stem and new vulcanite mortise work, I was surprised to see that this gigantic meerschaum stummel is not that hard to clench! With the proper bend angle, I find most bent heavy bent stummel pipes can clench rather comfortably, and this almost 5 oz beauty is no exception. This massive aged meer is certain to act as quite the heat sink for a cool smoke despite the rather unusually short stem. There are a few hairline cracks (fairly common with antique meers) that don’t completely wrap around the stummel. The pipe is so thick walled and the cracks are so minimal, the pipe appears stable and without any need to worry about any likely future break. The freshly epoxy adhered vulcanite mortise should help with allowing less stress on the meerschaum. The stem I’ve funneled (similar to the way you see many artisan pipes funneled), and I am excited to see how the next owner finds it smokes!
