Within the countless rock piles, I observed every color of the rainbow; white, orange, yellow, red rust, black, burnt, cindery-looking rocks. Anything that looked promising was examined. In all that time, I never found one solitary piece with visible gold. That still seems remarkable given the law of averages and the sheer number of rocks involved. Granted, when you\'re blessed with a rich claim to work, finding gold can seem easy. Having gold staring you in the face every day is really quite the luxury. Most small-scale artisanal miners will tell you a far different story. They reached the same conclusion I did long ago, i.e. \"there\'s no easy ounces.\" That\'s the reality. Yet, having spent years in the trade prospecting the goldfields of North American, I honestly believe a person stands a better chance now than ever before of locating a minable gold deposit. Twenty five years ago, no one forsaw gold prices increasing by six or seven times. Knowing that, who in their right mind would have sold their finds? Problem is, when your beans play out, any man in survival mode does what he must. Jumping ahead, conditions couldn\'t be better for gold mining. All it takes is time, determination, the right tools, hard work, good luck, access to righteous claims or the right friend with good claims, and favorable mining regs that allow a prudent man to mine.
Super-heated hydrothermal solutions, associated with volcanic activity, carry dissolved gold along with silica. Under intensely-high pressure, this aqueous mixture fills natural fissures and faults. Contact alteration zones act as interfaces between larger rock formations. Oftimes, contacts become the recipients of metals carried by the hot waters. Dissolved minerals like gold, silver, copper, lead, et al, as they cool, crystallize and harden into veins, sills, dikes, ledges, etc. The same principle applies to much larger geological formations. Contact zones are ideal areas for prospectors to hone in on. If canyons, creeks, rivers, arroyos, et al drain and carry alluvial material away from these contact zones, a prospector/miner may be in business.

The geology of the region is extremely diverse. I scrambled all over this terrain and found small placer depositson both sides of the pink rhyolite. That tells you a little something about the gold\'s source. Small, discrete deposits of placer gold extend even out onto the island. It\'s possible thatover time,indigenous Colorado Rivertribeslearned aboutgold’s value from both white men and Hispanics. It\'s a cinch miners from south of the border knew gold’s worthas did the hordes of Caucasians justentering the country. Gold causes an infectious disease. As diverse peoples mingle, one group passes ‘the fever’ on to other groups. Eons before people arrived...maybe?...ancientlodes had spawned these placer deposits. The free gold was discovered in pediments as well as in the region\'s canyons, ravines, and smaller drywashes.Extensions of similar, gold-bearing geology had also been discovered in granitic rocks of the California Potholes on the River’snorthern shore. These placers were extensively-mined as well. Remnant channels, carrying golddown through localcanyon systems became elevated ,over time,by down-cutting. They came to rest atop granite, rhyolite, gneiss, and schist bedrock. While I was never able to amass much gold from the Arizona and California Potholes, I did locate some beautiful nuggets up to 12 pennyweights in size. Drywashing was my preferred method of extraction. Driving south along the Gila Gravity Canal, at the southern-most end of the Laguna Mountains, you\'ll find yourself at the Gila River floodplain. Crossing beyond this relatively-narrow strip of irrigated cropland, the northern tip of the Gila Mountains rise up from the broad valley. Turning off Rte 95 and driving a few miles east on a gravel road lands you in the vicinity of Gila City. Here\'s another area for goldhounds to explore. To the west of Yuma are the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. Regional washes in the vicinity of the old ghost town of Tumco and the American Girl Minecontinue to produce placer gold on a small scale. Somewhat in-between but in a more northerly direction is Picacho Peak, another famous district where considerable mining occurred in recent years. Large-scale operations have pretty much eradicated any sign of the old placer diggings which were prominent here back in the early 1980s. Yuma\'s regional districts offer an interesting playground for the novice mining aficionado. Researching a bit deeper discloses several more gold districts throughout this portion of the Arizona desert. Unfortunately, many of these promising provinces lie on Military Proving Grounds, within Game Refuges, or on Colorado River Indian reservation land. Although you are rarely, if ever, assured of finding gold, your chances are still pretty fair in the old wild west. It\'s always advisable to investigate the claim status of land in mining districts open to mineral entry. When you see old mine workings and lots of claim markers, there\'s a good chance the land is under claim. The Yuma county B.L.M. office istheplace to find mining claim status as well as information on lands open to mineral entry in Arizona. One possible shortcut which might help avoid much of the run around connected with finding a place to work recreationally is to join a gold-mining club with valid claims. Fortunately, I had the run of the Laguna Mtns. This gave me ample room for prospecting to my heart’s content.
