HISTORY OF RAILWAYS
Until the end of steam on GWR branch lines, the lively small 2-6-2 tanks were to be encountered. The eleven engines of the 44xx class were built 1904-6, to be followed by no less than 175 engines of the 45xx class, built between 1906 and 1929. 3104, later 4404, was recorded at South Brent when new, being used on the Kingsbridge branch. The cast-iron \'S\' plate on the signal box was a means of drawing the lineman\'s attention to any failure of the signalling equipment.
