•Item DescriptionThis listing from a smoke free home is for aCGC Signature Series 9.8 (NM/MT) copy of the Image Comics reprint of Graphic Fantasy #1 (2/2021). That issue had been originally released in 1982 as a \"fanzine\" with just several hundred created, making this a situation of a reprint that is \"actually truly needed\" by collectors given that hardly anybody can own the original! Plus the 1982 originals were signed and numbered on the back covers, leading to green Qualified labels when graded at CGC; so the Image Comics version therefore makes available to the collecting community the opportunity for CGC SS yellow label for the first time for the issue, thus bringing another layer of purpose to the reprint.Interestingly -- and see if you agree with me on what I\'m about to say by taking a look at the label for yourself -- CGC appears to have applied a labeling error to this copy because nowhere do I see the words \"reprint\" nor \"second printing\" etc. anywhere on the label, i.e. the labeling they used is as if the 1982 original had been signed under Signature Series... which makes this particularcopy doubly-interesting as a collectible item taken \"as a whole\" inclusive of the CGC label itself, because \"in nature\" a Yellow Signature Series label for the 1982 original would not actually existgiven that the originals were signed and numbered (thus their Qualified label is the only thing you\'d ever actually see)! Thus this particular copy should appeal not just to Savage Dragon fans, Image Comics fans, and Erik Larsen fans, but should alsoappeal to collectors of interesting errors observed throughout the hobby and made by CGC in particular!So: what\'s \"key\" about Graphic Fantasy #1? Do you see that green fellow on the cover (next to the words \"THE DRAGON\")? You guessed it, that\'s Erik Larsen\'s earliest incarnation of the character that most collectors would recognize as Savage Dragon!Not all of the \"comic book authorities\" are actually on the same page about all of the early Dragon/Savage Dragon books.In the 51st edition of the Overstreet Price Guide (the last edition I for one bought) they included a listing for this Image Comics printing, but, they meanwhile continued to purposefully omit the original 1982 fanzine (I guess Overstreet doesn\'t recognize the fanzines and thus in turn believes this Image printing to be the first \"real\" printing?!?) and they continued to remark in the guide that Megaton #2 & 3 (1985, 1986) were the 1st cameo/full appearances of Savage Dragon.But CGC takes a different view: the very first original copy of the elusive Graphic Fantasy #1 from \"Ajax Comics Group\" 6/1982 looks to have been certified by CGC sometime around the 2009/2010 timeframe (take that Overstreet, CGC says it\'s real/certifiable!); and CGC eventually began to recognize it as the \"1st appearance of THE Dragon\" (\"The\" as opposed to \"Savage\")... and then moved their \"1st appearance of SAVAGE Dragon\" credit away from Megaton #3 where it had been, and over to Savage Dragon Limited Series #1 (7/1992), thereby \"demoting\" the Megaton books down to just \"Dragon Appearance\" in the process, in disagreement with Overstreet. Personally I feel that allof those early books are collectors items; and now, with the Image reprint of Graphic Fantasy #1, it is finally possible for collectors to actually own a printing of that key #1 \"fanzine\" issue that is actually affordable!Here is how the Image printing of Graphic Fantasy #1 was advertised when it was released:Written, Art and Cover by Erik Larsen. \'REVENGE!\' One of the most valuable and hardest to find SAVAGE DRAGON comics of all time is the 1982 fanzine GRAPHIC FANTASY where \'the Dragon\' made his first appearance.
