The soldier, diplomat, and architect signs this slip of paper printed with “With the Compliments of The Duke of Wellington”
Signature: “Wellington.” 4x2¼ affixed to a 4x2½ sheet.“With the Compliments of The Duke/ of/ Wellington” printed beneath signature. Gerald Wellesley (1885-1972) was a diplomat in the Diplomatic Corps in 1908. Subsequently, from 1910 to 1917, he functioned as Third Secretary of the Diplomatic Service and then, from 1917 to 1919, as Second Secretary of the Diplomatic Service. In 1921, he was invested as a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and also as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1935. Between 1936 and 1943 he was Surveyor of the King\'s Works of Art. During World War II, he served as an officer whose diplomatic skills were put to use in dealing with the allies. In 1943, he became the Duke of Wellington, inheriting the title from his nephew Henry. From 1944 to 1949 he served as Lord Lieutenant of the County of London and then from 1949 to 1960 he functioned as Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire. Wellesey was named a Knight of the Garter in 1951. His work as an architect includes the Faringdon Folly tower for Gerald Tyrwhitt-Wilson, 14th Baron Berners, and the Portland House in Weymouth in 1935. His father, Arthur Charles Wellesley (1849-1934) was a member of the eminent Wellesley family. He served in the military, although he saw no combat action as a member of the Household Division. By 1887, he had reached the rank of Colonel. He inherited the family title and estates upon his brother\'s passing in 1900. From 1900 until 1934, he was a member of the House of Lords, serving on the Conservative bench. He was also a member of the Marlborough Club, a gentleman\'s club. Lightly toned.
