GENERAL LUCIUS D CLAY (1898-1978) SIGNED LETTER FRAGMENT, \"Lucius D. Clay\", 8 x 3.25, C. 1947-49, to Major General M. G. White Deputy Chief of Staff, EUCOM,signed as Military Governor of the U.S. Zone, Germany, after WWII (He was, at the same time, Commander in Chief, U.S. Forces in Europe), succeeding General Eisenhower. He was responsible for thecontroversial commuting of some Nuremberg & Dachau War Crimes Trials Nazis death sentencesbecause, at the time, West Germany was considered strategically vital in the Cold War developing between the West and Eastern Bloc nations. Releasing the offenders early had the intended effect of boosting German public opinion towards the United States. On June 26, 1948, two days after theSoviets imposed the Berlin Blockade, Clay gave the order for theBerlin Airlift,a defining moment of the Cold War,and a demonstration of American support for the citizens of Berlin. The airlift of much needed supplies for the people of Berlin lasted 324 days and was an incredible feat of logistics. During theBerlin Wall crisis in 1963, he returned with President John F. Kennedy, who would make his famous Ich bin ein Berliner-speech. This is an extremely rare signature as Military Governor of Germany following WWII Nuremberg & Dachau War Crimes Trials. In fine condition, with some wrinkling and minor age toning.
