French And Indian Powder Horn:
$24600.00

Engraved powder horn dated 1762 (inside of horn) polychromed. A New York City to Lake Ontario map horn without owner's name by the so-called "Pointed Tree" carver. There are over 50 horns by this as yet unidentified engraver that have been identified and while not all are dated those that are, fall within the range of 1758 to 1764. 16-1/4" overall including the intact carrying lobe, the very slightly domed hardwood baseplug is a later replacement. The single neck ring has very light chipping. There are some insect bites -none of which effect the overall beauty of the piece -along the lower rim, just beneath the two running deer, there is one about 1/16" diameter, just above the "C" in "Crown Point" is one about 1/32”in diameter, at the engrailed edge directly above "Crown Point" another about 3/16" in diameter, and the last, on the pouring spout, one which may not have been caused by insects, about 1/4" in diameter. Again, none of these are of any real consequence. This is an excellent example of this engravers work, all of the then military outposts, as well as the waterways and the cities and towns along them are shown, the engraving is crisp and the original coloring quite vivid. The cartouche, with the floral motif above -so often depicted on this man's works-had been left vacant, at some later another owner inscribed a design which could be interpreted as initials (?), Mr. duMont suggested "C.0.0.".

Illustrated in "The Map Collector", Dec. 1982 (?) an English publication, an article by Mr. duMont on map horns, 7 illustrated. This horn also appears in Mr. DuMont’s book “American Engraved Powder Horns - The Golden Age / 1755-1783” on plates 68, page 52 (1978),

Provenance: Purchase from the renowned antiquarian Mr. Joe Kindig, Jr. of new York, Pennsylvania in November 1948.

The above description by Walter O’Conner - renowned French and Indian, Revolutionary War, and, Powder Horn Expert.

The book by John S. Dumont is included as is the leaf from his inventory list regarding this Powder Horn.
