Frederick Dielman, German-American painter-illustrator, letter with nice content:
$300.00

FrederickDielman –German-American illustrator and painter (1847-1935). ALS, one page 8 x 10, New York as theTreasurer of the Society of American Etchers. He writes to the publisher J. D. Waring discussing acceptable discountpricing for prints that were not paid for in a timely manner. Dielman’s letter suggests publishersfrequently faced the problem of artists being slow to pay for their orders ofbulk prints. The printer would attempt to recoup cost by selling them directlyat a discounted price. It appears the Society tried to shore up the market forall by encouraging an informal floor on how low the discounts could go toprevent dumping and depressing the market for other artists. While it is not true that all artists starveit seems many were hard-pressed to pay their printing bills.

Dielmanwas a versatile artist producing illustrations for many books as well as someof the murals and large mosaic panels inthe Library of Congress. An interestingletter offering some insight into the commercial world of etching in the late1880’s.

DearSir:

Atthe last meeting of the Society of Am. Etchers I submitted your letter of the18th Inst. giving your views concerning the advisability of allowing50% from price to ___ when payments are not made int 30 days. The matter wasreviewed at considerable length and a variety of opinions were expressed. It was finally agreed—and I was requested toreport this decision to you—that although the sales should as far as possible be made at theEstablished ____ and with only the usual discount off the each, but as otherpublishers were clearly not holding to this method, and it would seem unwise tohandicap you in your competition with others, the Society would not require youto refuse to make ____ ___ such could bemade only by allowing the above discount. It being understood however that regular prices are to be collected whenpossible and that of course the accounts actually received are [retained] inthe statements.

Iam very truly
