Fluorite from this region in County Durham is regarded as some of the finest in the world.

Consisting of a good cluster of inter grown Fluorite crystals, including many top quality interpenetrant twins, the Fluorite is a dark-emerald green colour with many displaying purple zoning. In daylight much of the cluster fluoresces a delightful bluey-purple with the zoning even more pronounced.

Also known as fluorspar, fluorite is the mineral form of calcium fluoride. Because its impurities give it a variety of semitransparent colorings, it is a popular ornamental and lapidary stone and has been used for these purposes since ancient times. The term fluorescence derives from this stone, as certain specimens display this visual phenomenon and glow under UV light.
Fluorite is believed to stimulate thought and enhance mental clarity. It is an excellent stone for removing negative energy. This may help to alleviate stress and confusion to provide for more powerful healing action of the mind, body and spirit.
The ancient Chinese used a scarlet fluorite as a protection against evil spirits, while the Romans believed that drinking alcohol from a cup carved out of this mineral would prevent drunkenness. Occasionally the Fluorite mineralisation is associated with snowy-white Calcite which contrasts superbly with the colourful cubic fluorite crystals. Once again, the Fluorite emits amazing fluorescence in natural daylight. The Graeber Jones Pocket was the first pocket to discover the green fluorite crystals that were slightly pointed and milky in colour but this site soon gave way to the beautiful Emerald Green colour we know today.

Spectacular Fluorite specimens continue to be discovered as the Diana Marine mine and some of the most gemmy crystals are being used to produce beautiful faceted stones for both the collector and as jewellery.
