Wife of President Warren G. Harding and First Lady from 1921 to 1923.
Autograph letter signed \"Mother\" as First Lady, The White House Washington stationery, not dated but accompanying envelope postmarked April 9, 1921, written to her daughter-in-law,Esther Mezger, filling all 4 pages of the four-page leaf, in part:You certainly made \'some surprise\' to me. How very nice to have a new daughter! You are now ready for the hot weather...I have to spend half of my time hanging my clothes - and you know if there is anything I really hate it\'s clothes. Mrs. Sawyer just came in...I am enclosing the children\'s April check. Take good care of yourself...As a teenager, Florence Kling had a son, Eugene Marshall DeWolfe known as Marshall, with “friend” Henry De Wolfe; though Florence and Henry may have eloped, there is no formal record of a marriage. Eugene later married the recipient of this letter, the former Esther Neely, and the couple had two children. Marshall, a hard drinker and gambler, died before Harding became President. The check Mrs. Harding refers to is evidently her contribution to the upbringing of her now-fatherless grandchildren.We authored the Presidential Autographs chapter in the 7th Edition of The Sanders Autograph Price Guide.
