Fine Old KUBA HELMET MASK Democratic Republic of the Congo [Boston Primitive]:

This is a very traditional Kuba mask from the Congo. It has not been \"improved\" or had inaccurate and fanciful features added, supposedly appealing to modern tourists and mistaken collectors. It is a large helmet mask made to fit comfortably over the wearer\'s head. Everything about it is properly done: the shaved forehead, temple scarifications, triangular patterning, slit eyes, etc., etc. A raffia ruff goes half way around at the bottom front, making a beard. Painted stripes and triangles have darkened considerably with time; the white (probably kaolin) is now very far from white. A large hole carved into the top is ringed with attachment holes for lashing some sort of crest onto it (feathers perhaps?). Tool marks left from shaping this mask are plainly visible on the forehead and nasal ridge; longer and larger carving evidence was left by an adze on the interior. There are two cracks in the wood, both repaired. Oneindigenousfix consists of string laced across the split to keep it from widening. The other crack is glued, either by a tribesman, dealer or collector. \"383\" on the inside is a collection number. The mask\'s size is about 15x10x10, very imposing. U.S. buyers please.
