These are my Round Punches
These punches are great for punching round holes for rivets, tenons, or screw holes in hot stock. The slightly pointed tip helps the punch guide the hot material around it resulting in easier punching, a cleaner hole, and less material removed. The slightly pointed tip should be carefully maintained throughout the life of the tool.
These punches are about 9-10 inches long and are made from new, 5/8-inch round, 5160 spring steel. The smallest part of the tapered tip isapproximately 3/16-inch round.They are not hardened or tempered because punches get hot while in use, which removes any tempering done previously. The punch should be struck once or twice andremoved from the hole to air cool while you inspect the hole, then a couple more hits, then remove, inspect, and repeat. On stock larger than 3/8-inch a small can of oil coolant is a good idea.
