The 29th Massachusetts was a notable Civil War combat unit, the only non-Irish regiment to serve in the Irish Brigade. Their battles included Big Bethel, White Oak Swamp, Antietam, Bethseda Church, The Crater at Petersburg and Fort Stedman to name a few. An Original Civil War receipt for the last effects of Private Orrin D Holmes, received from Captain John M Deane by Nathan Holmes, Private Holme's father, listing the effects incl his album, diary and Silver watch, and wallet with 54 dollars in notes.Private Orrin Holmes a young farm boy from East Bridgewater , Mass served 4 years with the notable 29th Massachusetts Infantry, tragically dying of wounds at the final Battle for Fort Stedman, March 25, 1865, the final offensive launched by Lee on federal Lines, just days before the War's end. He is buried at Union Cemetery, Brockton, Mass. (His War letters have been published online). 1p 8 x 5" ink on lined paper. Age stains, edge wear, Overall VG.
The receipt came from the effects of Captain John Milton Deane, 29th Massachusetts, awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor at the Confederate Assault on Fort Stedman, Virginia, March 25, 1865. Comes w service info.
