Burton was the Schoolmaster at Lea and Holloway, the former Nightingale family estate. Nightingale retained a strong connection with the property, later joining the school board. An avid reader herself,Nightingale was deeply interested in the subject of history, hence the subject matter of some of her books gifted to Burton by her, both before and after her death.
