Chasmaporthetes is an extinct genus of hyenas that lived during the Late Miocene to the Early Pleistocene epochs, roughly 5 to 1 million years ago. Unlike the modern hyenas, which are primarily scavengers, Chasmaporthetes were more adapted to active predation and fast running. Its ecological niche is resembles wolf, more or less.
