Frederick William Faber. FAITH OF OUR FATHERS. Written in 1849. English version (4 stanzas),with the American variant “Our land” replacing “England” instanza 3. Based on Hebrews 11:6: “It is impossible to please Godwithout faith, since anyone who comes to him must believe that heexists and rewards those who try to find him.” The lyrics areoffered here in a tasteful 8” x10” frame, with wall mount and easel-back.

Frederick Faber\'s family was of Huguenot descent and Calvinistbeliefs. His grandfather was the Anglican vicar of their hometownin Yorkshire. In 1839 Faber [see photo] was himself ordained in theChurch of England. In college at Oxford, however, he had alreadybeen exposed to Anglo-Catholic beliefs through the preaching of JohnHenry (later Cardinal) Newman.

Fewpeople were surprised when Faber ultimately joined Newman and enteredthe Catholic Church in 1845. Like Newman, Faber was ordained aCatholic priest in 1847. The next 16 years would be a time ofintense research, writing and publishing for Father Faber. Thelyrics to Faith of Our Fathers remainhis best-known work. He died in 1863 at the age of 49.

The text offered here is the original version of the hymn, including areference to “Mary\'s prayers” in the third stanza. So popularhas this hymn become that it long ago bridged the Protestant andCatholic divide, with due alterations to that 3rdstanza. Non-Catholic versions generally replace the reference toMary with “faith and prayer,” while Korean Protestants simplyomit the stanza. (To further complicate matters, Faber also composeda 7-stanza version for Ireland which – until the 1960s – was sungat Irish hurling matches!)
