Excellent, gemmy Rhodochrosite cluster
From Hotazel Mine, Hotazel, Kalahari Manganese Field, Northern Cape, South Africa

Here is a classic, very desirable specimen of juicy red crystallized Rhodochrosite from the famous Hotazel Mine in South Africa. This piece in particular has complex structure that is reminiscent of art deco architecture! The basic structure here is the classic scalenohedral habit, with multiple crystals in close parallel formation that creates a tightly grouped, multi-stepped arrangement with bright luster that really reflects the light beautifully from multiple angles, especially as the piece is moved in hand! Minor damage to the reverse, and as is the nature of this material, there are some nicks and minor scuffs here and there. I'm particularly picky when it comes to adding specimens to my personal collection, and this one definitely spoke to me. I have seen a number of specimens from this and nearby localities and to my eye the small level of abrasions and nicks is more than acceptable - to the point where I'm confident it will be some time before I am able to come across a suitable replacement specimen that can match how intact and relatively damage-free that this piece is. In person this piece has a cherry red to strawberry jam hue that accentuates the overall structure of it. Simply put, this is a GOOD one!
This is a classic, old school example from this historic locality, that no longer produces and hasn't for a long time... This specimen in particular was mined sometime in the early to mid 70's, I would say. The Hotazel mine may have played second fiddle to the even more famous, original N'Chwaning I and then II mines, but also yielded more unique looking habits over the course of its production. Pieces from here could be considered somewhat obscure in comparison, but are no less attractive, desirable, and exceptional in their quality. Hotazel was home to some of the finest examples the species could offer, and in my opinion stands toe to toe with anything N'chwaning or Wessels could dish out. The Rhodochrosite specimen available here is a testament to this.
Fine crystallized Rhodochrosite specimens from South Africa's Kalahari Manganese Field localities such as N'Chwaning mines, Wessels, and of course Hotazel, are always in demand and unfortunately for us all, are simply not in any appreciable supply save for whatever gets recycled out of old collections, which is actually the case here... Don't miss your chance to add such a quality piece from the famous Hotazel mine! This one will be sorely missed.
