American-born swimmer Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim the English Channel on August 6, 1926. It took her 14 hours and 34 minutes to swim from France to England and she was welcomed back to the States with a ticker tape parade and a Vaudeville contract. Gertrude lived to the age of 98--although she was nearly deaf for the final 50+ years of her life--and passed away in 2003. This is an original hand-written fan letter from Trudy signed and dated 11/1/1978. It measures 8" x 9" in red ink and is in excellent condition as pictured.
