Picture shows 5,000 people in attendance, maybe even 1,000 cars in the picture.
Closer to town, Old Man Mountain (also referred to as Elkhorn Hill) on Elkhorn Lodge property rose to prominence in the 1920s because of ski-jumping, with competitions held both in winter (first meet March 1924) and summer (first carnival June 1931).
Over100 volunteers, hauled 500 cubic yards of snow from the top of Trail Ridge to Elkhorn Hill one Sunday morning, frosting the jump and landing zone with a thin layer of snow in a “so crazy it just might work” Depression-era stunt.It did, to the tune of 5000 spectators, a Fox Movietone film crew, and a successful race against the sun.
