Lawyer, politician, statesman and Nobel Prize winner, Elihu Root has signed and dated this historical account of the opening of the New York State Constitutional Convention dated April 6, 1915. This historically significant signed account reads,

“The Seventh Constitutional Convention of the State of New York was organizing, andat 2:30 pm, a short recess was granted by President, Elihu Root. The moment the delegates scattered and gave me a chance to get through the Assembly Chamber, I made my way to the presiding officer’s desk, and there in front of the crowded chamber, Mr. Root wrote out his name. He sat in the chair at the desk from which he will direct this great body, and I was very sorry that he immediately refused, when I asked for a word of some kind in his own hand-writing.”

Prior to presiding as a member of the NY State Senate, Root served as the 41stUS Secretary of War and as the 38thUS Secretary of State. In 1912 as a result of his work to bring nations together through arbitration and cooperation, Root received the Nobel Peace Prize.
