\"I\'ve had a number of early Sam Frank (Wally came later) pipes and always keep an eye out for them. I think he started in the 1890s and there are some really sweet cased pipes out there. Later he was doing fairly run of the mill briars. Before WWI everything was stamped French Briar. After WWI things branch out more. There are Italian and Algerian briar pipes. Later everything seems to fall under the heading of Imported Briar. Sam also had a lot of various lines with names like Wide Bite, Old Crony, Shur-Dri and Algero. They sold for 25 or 50 cents. The Frank stamped pipes were in the $1 range.
This particular pipe looks like a 1920s pipe to me. It has the chunky bit and round hole. The hard rubber is good quality. Even after all this time it didn\'t show any oxidation. No tooth marks either. The bowl is very lightweight. The finish is really dark. I just cleaned and waxed it. Some nice figuring under there. Maybe it had a light coat of shellac that went mostly opaque. It has a white circle on the stem. maybe it\'s sort of a Yello Bole precursor. Anyway, it\'s a nice little pipe.\"
