HE WAS MUCH CONCERNED WITH THE TRAINING OF MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS, AND ENGINEERING STUDENTS, WROTE A CLASSIC TEXTBOOK ON ANALYSIS, WROTE ONE OF THE FIRST TEXTBOOKS ON THE THEORY OF RELATIVITY, AND WROTE BIOGRAPHIES ON MANY LEADING FRENCH MATHEMATICIANS. CHARLES EMILE PICARD(1856-1941) SIGNED QUOTE, “Emile Picard, Paris, 17 December 1924” (dated the same year he was elected the 15th member to occupy seat 1 of the Academie Francaise), on a card 4.25 x 3.5, his title in French (translated): “of the French Academy, Permanent Secretary of the Academy of Sciences of Paris”, by the French mathematician who made his most important contributions in the fields of analysis, function theory, differential equations, and analytic geometry. His three-volume masterpiece Traite d’analyse was published between1891-1896. His handwritten quote in French, translated in full: “One could sometimes criticize certain conveniences created by science by accusing it of increasing our desires to the detriment of our happiness, and to say with the Ecclesiast that the one who increases his knowledge increases his pain. But there are also times when one sees ideas of beauty and of harmony coming from scientific knowledge which raise man above his immediate interests and contribute in some way to the development of morality.” The card is in fine condition, with minor age toning.
