\"Diesel Locomotive Operating Manual No. 2311 for Passenger Locomotive Model E8 With Vapor Car Steam Generator and Elesco Steam Generator\" has been produced \"to assist the engineman in the operation of the Model E8 locomotive. It covers basic (standard) equipment, as well as the most commonly used \'extras.\' The first three sections of this manual are devoted to a description of the locomotive, normal operations over the road, and special conditions and problems during operation.\" Sections 4, 5 & 6 cover additional components. The General Description defines the E8 as a locomotive consisting of one or more units rated at 2250 horsepower each. Each unit has two 12-clinder, 2-cycle, Model 567B diesel engines which drive the main generators and auxiliaries.
It is illustrated with photographs, line drawings, charts and wiring diagrams. The pictures show the actual front and back of the manual, the General Data page, the Table of Contents and seven other pages.

We are honored to be the appointed caretakers of 3 steam locomotives owned by the city of Portland, Oregon. The collection includes the world famous SP 4449 Daylight locomotive, originally restored to pull the American Freedom Train in 1975-76. The magnificent SP&S 700 is also an operational 4-8-4 which came back to life in 1990. They are joined by their little sister, the OR&N 197, a Pacific 4-6-2 which will steam up again in about 2 years. All three are located at the new Oregon Rail Heritage Center, a working engine house with a turntable, allowing public access to the locomotives. We receive no support from the city, but rely solely upon volunteers and donations. Your support is deeply appreciated.
