EATON HUMANITIES BUILDING, WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY, SALEM OREGON, 1914 REAL PHOTO:
$11.99

I am assuming that this is an image of the buildings at Willamette University, which is a private university in Salem, Oregon, founded in 1842. It is the oldest university in the Western United States and is made up of an undergraduate College of Arts & Sciences and post-graduate schools of business and law. The university was founded as the Oregon Institute by the missionary Jason Lee, who had arrived in what was then known as the Oregon Country, in 1834 and had founded the Indian Manual Labor Institute for the education of the local Native Americans. Bylaws were adopted and a board of trustees elected, and the Oregon Institute was officially established, opening in 1844 with a total of five students and one teacher. The original building of the institute was a three-story frame structure that burnt down in 1877 but at the time one of the largest structures in the Pacific Northwest. I think that this is Eaton Hall, an academic building, completed in 1909. It is a four-story brick and stone hall that is the fourth oldest building on the campus after Walter Hall (1867). It is a mix of architectural styles but is was primarily Late Gothic Revival. Originally constructed with round spires on the turrets, these were later removed. It was home to the law school form 1923 until 1938, an administration building in the 1960s and now houses the universities Humanity Department. The Real Photo Card was published by the “Patton Card Co., Salem” and postmarked 1914. It is in good condition with minor wear, three good corners and the lower right bent. The image is clean and clear but has some imprints across the bottom. The reverse has some minor edge stains. My scanner has gone magenta on me,,, the colors on the images are more a neutral B&W. Unless otherwisenoted, I use Wikipedia for research.
