On July 16, 1969 as Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin prepared for their historic journey to the moon, artist Paul Calle was with them as they discussed the Mission at breakfast and during their preparations as they Suited Up. Calle was the only artist allowed access to the astronaut crew of Apollo 11 and the dozens of his pen and ink sketches made that morning stand as a unique historical record of the activities of the crew in the hours before they launched to the Moon. The majority of these sketches can be seen in the book, Celebrating Apollo 11, the Artwork of Paul Calle written by Chris Calle. In the movie First Man, the story of astronaut Neil Armstrong directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Ryan Gosling as Armstrong, Chris plays his father sketching the Apollo 11 crew during the crew breakfast before the launch to the Moon.Paul Calle designed the 1969 First Man on the Moon stamp and in 1989 his son Chris designed the 20th Anniversary Moon Landing stamp. In 1994 for the 25th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing the US Postal Service chose the Calle\'s to jointly designed the 25th anniversary 29c and $9.95 express mail stamps issued July 20, 1994 in Washington DC.
Paul Calle was the only artist present with the Apollo X1 crew as they prepared for and Suited Up for their historic launch to the Moon on July 16, 1969. Calle\'s pen and ink on the spot sketches of the \"Suiting Up\" are an amazing documentation of the preparation by the crew and are on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington , DC. Calle was one of the original group of artists chosen by NASA to cover the Mercury program and document in pencil and paint the beginning of the US Space Age. As an official NASA artist Calle covered the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and the Shuttle programs spanning three decades of Space art.
Chris Calle followed in the footsteps of his father Paul by becoming a member of the NASA Fine Art program covering the Space Shuttle program.
